Birds have a significant place as subject matter for Gilot with a variety of representations in her work, including the Owl standing motionless and silent under the full moon, to the flurry of pairs or families of birds in full flight going about the activities of the day. Birds in the Forest captures the action of two birds flying freely and effortlessly between the trees of the Forest. To create this bucolic avian scene, Gilot took full advantage of the unique technical properties of the lithograph in order to intensify her graphic work. In 1974 while working at the Mourlot Printshop in Paris, she applied the same plates for which she had previously used muted deep blues, grey and green to a second bright and radiant state using bright yellow, orange and gold, as seen in Birds in the Forest II, creating a totally different mood and adding vitality to the scene by strategic use of color alone.
