“I am using forms and colors that related to archetypal symbols that have existed for a long time … A symbol doesn’t have to look like the thing: it must evoke the thing … Images like this go back to the dawn of consciousness.” - Françoise Gilot, 1987
In 1977, Gilot finished two important suites exploring archetypal symbols, heraldic emblems, and mystic diagrams. The first suite created at the Tamarind Institute addressed the well-known theme of the Four Elements (Air, Earth, Fire Rose and Spring Water) which she used as a springboard to highlight oppositions and similarities. Using square-shaped lithographs for the entire series, she partitions the image into geometric areas using a harmonic range of colors to complement and contrast the elements. For instance, Air and Earth are printed on the same warm buff Arches paper while Fire Rose and Spring Water are both printed on grey Arches. The symbols are multiple, from Egyptian goddesses and demons, and the masculine and the feminine, to the central mandala of the solitary lotus flower.
