Gilot created this stunning image during a second and final extended period of printmaking following a trip to Greece, a favorite destination of the artist. She had spent several summers sailing in the Aegean with her young children with first-hand experience of the wind, the water and the seascape that inspires and feeds the artistic imagination. Produced in a monumental eight runs in nine colors, Sailing Alone demonstrates Gilot’s mastery of the lithography medium, overlaying and interweaving multiple washes and crayon textures as seen in the bottom half of the image, a prefiguring of her move toward full abstraction in printmaking just two years later.
